Anna’s name lived on through a granddaughter, Anna Carmeletia, who probably received her red hair from her Irish grandparents. She married Joseph Lyle Crowder and spent the latter part of her life in Charles City, not far from Winneshiek Co, the home of John and Anna.

James Patrick Halloran Sr. was born in Decorah, IA 27 Jul 1883. His parents were Maurice Halloran and Catherine McCarthy.

James left home at age 16 picking up work as a general laborer. He got a job working at the Decorah Public Opinion newspaper as an apprentice printer from 1902-1904. He worked 6 days and 2 evenings a week for a sum of $2 a week.

He earned a degree in shorthand and business from Valders College in Decorah in 1906. After graduating he left Decorah for a better job at the Hampton Globe newspaper in LeMars.

There he met his future wife Mary Schmidt who was also working for the newspaper. They married 4 May 1909 in Lemars. Her parents were Boi Schmidt and Mary Peterson.

James became owner of the Hampton Globe newspaper in partnership with A.A. Hanson. They resold the paper to its original owner, Mr. Bilderback, in April 1910.

The family moved to Alaska, SD where James became publisher and editor of the Alaska Leader, a democratic newspaper. In 1912 James became publisher and editor of the Smithland Sun. The family resided in Smithland, a town of about 400 people, located in western Iowa along the Little Sioux River. It was there that Marion was born.

While in Smithland James served as the local mortician. He was elected 1 st vice-president of the Interstate Funeral Directors Assn, in 1914 at their first organizatinal meeting in Sioux City, IA. An industrious young man he also was the proprietor of a furniture store. A classified ad that ran in the

Smithland Sun 6 Jun 1912 reads, “Furniture and Undertaking, J.P Halloran, phone #64”.

Family tradition states that he was also elected Mayor of the small town of Smithland, Woodbury Co. The family uprooted again this time settling in South Sioux City, NE where James took over the Dakota County Recorder from retiring editor Burt Kroesen 17 Aug 1916.

The 1920 federal census lists the family in Fond Du Lac Twp. Wl where James’s two sisters, Margaret Halloran and Kate Harrison, resided.

Finally the family settled in West Allis, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wl where their two youngest children were born. He opened his own print shop with his son James Jr. James continued in the printing business working for Wisconsin Cuneo Press until his retirement in 1957.

James Sr. died 1 Oct 1963 in West Allis and Mary died 30 Nov 1959. They had 5 children: James Jr., Marion, Robert Leon, Roy Daniel and Betty Ann.

James Patrick Jr. was born 15 Oct 1911 in LeMars, IA. He married Helen Marie Horvatich 25 Aug 1934 in Milwaukee, Wl. She was born 20 Aug 1917 in Milwaukee to Rose Mickich and Matthew Horvatich emigrants from Croatia. Helen died 11 Dec 1986 and James died 29 Sep 1991 at West Allis. Both are buried at Highland Memorial Park, New Berlin, Wl.

James Jr. followed in his father’s footsteps in the printing business working for Wisconsin Cuneo Press until his own retirement. Helen was employed as a stenographer for the Milwaukee County probation department.

They have 5 children: Nancy Rae, Patricia Lane, James III, J. Matthew and Timothy. Nancy married William Francis Paumier of Canton, OH. Patricia married Gilbert Latus. James III married Nell O'Hara. J. Matthew resides in Livonia, Ml and Timothy died young.

Marion was born 18 May 1914 in Smithland, IA. She was born premature at 7 months and her mother put her in a shoe box on the oven door to keep her warm when she was first born. She suffered mental impairment and a congenital hip defect. She married Orson Billet. Marion died 19 Oct 1959 in West Allis.

Robert Leon was born  in Fond Du Lac, Wl. He married Virginia Deya. Robert died 15 Jan 1992 in West Allis. They have 2 children: Danny and Mickey. Danny died 13 Dec 1991.

Rov Daniel was born in West Allis. He married Beverly Jane McDonald on 5 Jul 1947 in West Allis. Roy served in the U.S. Marines 1943-1945 in WWII. He was an elementary teacher and principal. They have one child: Thomas Guilde. He married Josephine ‘Jody" Pitz. Thomas is an attorney in West Allis.

Bettv Ann was born in West Allis. She married Santos “Chuck” Farina on 10 June 1950 in Milwaukee.

Maurice I Halloran was born in Dec. 1843 in County Kerry, Ireland. He emigrated to the U.S. in 1862 at age 18. He married Catherine McCarthy in Wl in the early 1870’s.
